First week of Febuary for UHELP.

Published by ducan on February 02, 2009

Events for first week of February 2009.

This week is Volunteer week, check out the events around campus to find ways to volunteer on and around campus.

We will be officially involved on Friday, where we will be manning a kiosk alongside Mason Amnesty. We will ask you and the student populace to sign this letter asking President Barrack Obama to keep his promise to raise the human rights violations committed by the Lord’s Resistance Army to international focus. Amnesty will also have different letter asking to abolish the death penalty.

We will be at the kiosk from 10 - 2 on Friday, if you cannot make it to the kiosk during those times, please take a moment to sign this letter to Barrack Obama:

Six months ago, you wrote a letter to Resolve Uganda’s members about the violent attacks and abductions of children committed by the Ugandan rebel Lord’s Resistance Army, stating that, “…the international community can and should do more to resolve this horrendous situation, and I will continue to press this case.”

As a member of Resolve Uganda, I thank you for your concern about this deeply saddening crisis. Even as I write, the LRA are actively abducting more children in the DR Congo and South Sudan. In the past two months, they have also massacred over 800 innocent civilians.

I write today to ask that you live up to what you wrote, and take action to end this crisis and promote sustainable peace. Specifically, you should develop a strategy to apprehend top LRA leaders and prevent them from committing more atrocities, help ensure better protection for vulnerable civilians, and provide the humanitarian and development assistance needed for affected communities to recover.

Uganda HELP will have it’s first meeting this Wednesday, February 4th, at 7:30pm in the Johnson Center Meeting Room “G”. This week we will be updating you on the situation in northern Uganda and plan events this semester (and beyond) to bring attention to the crisis in the DRC and Uganda. We might also show the very informational documentary Uganda Rising (narrated by Kevin Spacey).

See you at all the Volunteer Week events, especially Friday from 10 - 2 at a Kiosk in the JC, and at our meeting on Wednesday, bring your friends!
